If you want to read a really good version of the twelve steps (and guide to doing them) written by an atheist, I recommend Jeffrey Munn's Staying Sober Without God. As a fellow atheist with long-term sobriety, it's no surprise to me that you're stuggling. You're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
