This is kind of a bandaid fix, but you could try pheromone diffusers. Feliway has one that mimics the pheromones of a mother cat that make the kittens bond with eachother and feel safe. I tried it when I rescued a kitten and my adult cat was very stressed out, and it made a huge difference. I know they are very different situations, but my cat went from always being on edge and stressed, to being back to her normal self again. Since its a diffuser, you just plug it in where the cat hangs out the most and it will help make them feel safer and calmer. I didnt have too much faith it it working when I tried it, it was just on the check list of things the vet asked me to do before trying medication or rehoming the kitten, but it made an enormous difference. Lowering the cats stress might make it easier, or at least buy some time, to figure out whats wrong. here's a link to buy it on amazon, but they also have a website.
