I bought an ice pack specifically for hips about 6 weeks before I had a THR. At 3AM 2 nights before my surgery I was in such agony I went and iced my hip (and another around my knee) which let me fall to sleep only to wake up and discover I had ice burns on my thigh and lost some skin. Fortunately it was far enough from the posterior incision to not cause surgery to be rescheduled. BUT for me icing for hip/knee/leg/ankle pain prior to my THR was a lifesaver. I'm 31 days post-op and maybe ice once or twice a week now.
