I learned how to lucid dream through books and although I'm out of practice now, have had some great ones. One literally changed my life because I used to have recurring dreams of being shot, but in my most vivid, aware lucid dream, I stopped a wall of bullets being shot at me by some wise old Chinaman in a strange hat, just like Neo in The Matrix, and ever since then, no more dreams of being shot. I wanted to give you this recommendation for a book, it's mind-blowing. Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self by Robert Waggoner I'm so grateful that at least I get imagery when I dream, just not in waking life, ever.
