While it's true the plastic housings are known to break, the real issue is that shops over torque the plastic ones on. It also doesn't help that the most common aftermarket Toyota oil filter wrench is poorly made and will break those plastic tabs off this style. The slots on the sides break the tabs off because the cup that goes around the base of the housing has too much wiggle room and is very easy to become cockeyed. Now this style is what shops should use. It fits the base of the housing perfectly, and does not have the slots in the side that break off the tabs. Using an OEM Toyota housing is fine. Even the plastic one is fine, as long as it is not over torqued and the right tool is used to remove it. Do NOT let Valvoline install an aftermarket metal filter housing. I can already tell it's the same one as in this video, it will cause more harm than good. The guy in this video goes in depth with Toyota oil filters.
