People are saying you need to have air flow behind the microwave, but is it okay for you to stack stuff on top of this microwave? If so, I'd suggest that you lay a big flat thing on top of the microwave (cardboard, wood, plastic, foamcore, whatever--a cutting board, a random plank, a big bin/box lid, an unwanted ugly art piece/picture frame, maybe even just a big flat piece of cardboard). Have it sticking out over the back an inch or two to preserve the air flow behind your microwave, then attach your cover piece to the back. You could do a little "curtain" of fabric hanging down, or a piece of art/decor, or a whiteboard for notes, or a corkboard/magnetboard to display cute photos/postcards/mementoes, or whatever. If the cover piece on the back is hanging with too much weight and causing the board on top of the microwave to overbalance and fall off, stack something heavy on top of it, like a big tray of kitchen stuff or a big ceramic bowl. Alternative idea: Get a flat, rigid, rectangular thing big enough to hide the back of the microwave, and attach it to the outside of a single bookend that you wedge under the microwave. Third idea: Tape together three rectangles of cardboard or foamcore to make a short version of those tri-fold display boards that kids use for science fair displays. Just, you'd have the front side facing the microwave and the BACK would be displayed to the living room. That basic structure (three planes at right angles) could be made with lots of other materials and methods as well.
