Pandolfini's Endgame Course: Basic Endgame Concepts Explained by America's Leading Chess Teacher (Fireside Chess Library)

Grandmaster Secrets: Endgames by Andrew Soltis I thought was one the best titles for this exact problem. I own a reprint of Paul Keres' Practical Chess Endings but I learned more from Soltis. Also an older title, Pandolfini's Endgame Course, is particularly good for the digestible "chunks" approach you want. Both titles are out-of-print but still available cheaply used.
