It really is because of how much more of the lead is exposed from helical shapeners, I think. Like a visually misleading illusion or something. But really they do eat much less than traditional hand sharpeners. I don’t have any experience with the FC sharpener you have here, it one tip might be that if it has an auto-stop feature, you don’t necessarily always have to crank it until it hits that point. Many times 3-4 spins of the handle is enough to sharpen to a point you need.
