The sump would just help circulate water in the interim since you would have it discharge back into the pool vs. yard/drain.. You need one with a long power cord so you can set it in the deep end. They can be used to drain pools when the need arises, so I'd look for one that you could have for that purpose as well. Some have auto shut-off, larger ones can pump faster/further.
