We used the expensive veterinary prescription dry food, and it nearly killed our cat. He went into remission after moving to 100% fancy feast classic pate. A bottle of Lantus/Glargine is 100% the way to go if insulin is needed. Take the dosage increases slowly, because it is long acting, so it takes several days to see what the dose will actually achieve. It's easy to use syringes, though it takes a bit of getting used to. Monitor glucose often. The AlphaTrak3 lancer was much easier to actually get a drop of blood with our cat's ear, as compared to less expensive human testers. It's much easier to test with two people than one. The continuous glucose monitor (Libre) was extremely helpful to see the trends, but also terrible (alarms that can't be silenced going off in the middle of the night) and innacurate (low values read lower, high values read higher). Our cat would rip the cgm off quickly unless we put a collar on him. We used a soft Elizabethan collar from Amazon, then it worked out, despite him hating us slightly. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G2BS1KCC Best of luck!

Soft Elizabethan collar. 100% saved our cat from himself. We tried the pj's, but didn't help stop him at all. If anything, the sensor would get wedged in the limb-holes and everything seemed much worse. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G2BS1KCC
