I think a 5-year journal is an incredible gift for anyone, but especially for someone who’s struggling to make a better future for themselves. After I found my grandma’s 5-year journal from the 1940s (where she went from gushing about her friend’s new roller skates to meeting my grandpa to saying goodbye as he shipped off for WWII), I was psyched to find they still made them. Each page is one day, divided into 5 sections. After you finish the first year, every day you’re reminded of exactly where you were exactly one year (or two, or three, or four) years ago. It can be really motivating. Also: if you aren’t participating in Al-Anon, please check them out. It’s so hard to be the child of an alcoholic & struggle with your desire for a relationship & need to protect yourself emotionally. It can be so helpful to have a support system of people who understand what you’re going through. Good luck to you & good luck your father! Even if he’s never able to express it to you, he’s incredibly fortunate to have a daughter as kind & forgiving & supportive as you are.
