A really good survey is The Orthodox Church by Timothy Ware. The author (who later became a bishop, Metropolitan Kallistos) tells not only what we believe, but how we got here – he lays out how history, doctrine, and culture came together to make the apostolic faith into what you see today. After fifty years it's still one of the most popular introductions to Orthodox Christianity.
