Yeah that’s the tough part; the whys! The Jones patterning book was the standard for decades. It reads like stereo instructions but the info is solidly there. I don’t know if it will meet the ‘Whys’ aspect to your satisfaction (I think all of us shoemakers are a little ‘off’ and the industry attracts technical people.). Learning patterning is a lot of ‘you have to do this, you have to do it right, and you have to follow the instructions or fail and see for yourself’; and that’s part of the learning. I’ve seen shoemaking students stubbornly ignore instructions as “that would look so much cooler to do it this way!” And of course it doesn’t work. Marcell Mrsan is the other patterning guy. He has a lot of material out there videos, dvds, reference material, classes. He just came out with a new book dedicated to patterning but it’s expensive. Dunno how good it is but he specifically says he addresses the ‘why’s’ on the back cover. His early videos were a little tough to follow but that was like 15-20 years ago and I think he probably has his spiel down pat by now. I went to Italy and learned classic shoemaking from a 83 year old guy who had been doing it since he was 12 and I still don’t feel I understand all the whys sometimes sigh https://noblefootwear.com/product/pattern-cutting-step-by-step/ https://www.amazon.com/Big-Book-Footwear-Uppers-Construction/dp/B0GPJZFN65/ https://www.marcellmrsan.com/books Zegzug.com
