I recommend you purchase a copy of The S&W Revolvers - A Shop Manual - New Expanded 5th Edition by Jerry Kuhnhausen. Read it until you understand the answer to your question. You can absolutely work on your own revolver, but you can’t learn as you go. That’s a recipe for a broken part or a possible disaster.
