Pick 1 project. Just buy what they tell you and nothing more. Just slowly build up. If you use videos, find videos where the actual crocheter is talking and explaining things. There are a lot of videos titled as “beginner friendly“, but they only have music and the directions. These patterns are very simple, but they are not fresh beginner friendly. Save those for when you have actually learned what a single crochet is and how to count your rows and what not. My own suggestion for a beginner is using a size 4 mm hook with worsted weight yarn. I began with a Boye 4.25, but it’s really not that common across other brands. You could buy a full set, but I really wouldn’t suggest it until you know you want to do crochet. But if you do, you can get a really cheap set off Amazon. Go for the acrylic type. I would suggest Michaels Loops and Threads or One Pound Caron. You could go for red heart which is very common, but I think the splitting of Red Heart is more of a hindrance now to beginners than anything. I really like Big Twist, but I don’t know about its quality anymore before Joannes closed, it wasn’t as good as it was when I began. I would say any pattern that uses lightweight or DK and a 3 mm hook is a little small to begin with for a beginner. Even now I just size all those patterns up to be a worsted weight with a 4 mm hook. The point is you want big enough stitches to see but also the smaller your yarn and the smaller your stitches are the harder it is for you to deal with standard beginner tension issues. Beginners often have very tight tension so it’s just better to begin bigger. Stay away from anything with fluffy yarn or blanket, yarn or velvet yarn. That’s really not beginner friendly. Yes people say they learned through that, but there’s always an exception to the general concept of how to do it. A lot of people will say beginners should begin with a 5 mm hook and worsted weight, but 5 mm a little large for Amigurumi and worsted weight. That’s more like for blankets, hats and scarves. When you’re making things for toys, we size down hook sizes on purpose. So what it says on the package is normally meant for clothing but because we need a tighter stitch to keep the stuffing hidden you normally subtract down by 1 to 2 sizes. Useful but not necessary would be stitch markers. You can always use slips of scrap yarn to mark the beginning of your round. But stitch markers are only like a few bucks. But beyond that, I don’t think you should buy anything else unless you don’t have scissors at home. You also will need a yarn needle. It’s really important as a beginner for you to understand what is a fair your price for acrylic or polyester yarn. If you see red heart being sold for anything above like $4 on Amazon for a 300g skein don’t buy it. They will sometimes get up to eight or $16 per single skein and that’s absolute robbery. I recently learned a lot of beginners don’t realize that. Obviously, if you’re gonna buy something like 1000 g yeah it’s gonna be more expensive. Like 1 pound of yarn is going to be like eight to $10 which mathematically would make sense.
