Thank you for the advice, do you have any recommendations for good introductory material. If you’re purely a hobbyist, it would depend on how deep you want to get into this. It may be easiest to take it step by step, learning how to do individual things as needed. Some good basic books: Graphic Design School Meggs’ History of Graphic Design Although I am curious why for something such as interior design magazine covers visual appeal isn't a good enough reason. There’s a good explainer of the differences between graphic design and graphic art in this post. The gist is that design always has a purpose and function beyond aesthetic appeal. It’s often said that design is, at its core, creative problem solving. I’m a former magazine and publication art director. Magazine covers are pretty complex, especially when there are no existing styles and guides to work from and no established brand. They have to appeal to a specific audience. They have to reinforce and reflect the brand, and consistently meet standards and business needs. They need to reflect an understanding of the audience. They need to have enticing content to promote interest. Some have to compete with other titles on a newsstand. They need a good balance of text and imagery, and effective selection of art. Choice of magazine for some is like a lifestyle decision. Readers want to identify with what they see, be excited by it, feel like it’s appealing directly to them in some way. They want to feel cool for subscribing to and reading it. The process of design is taking all these objectives and considerations and condensing them into effective combinations of imagery and text. Making stuff look good or cool is part of it, but it’s not the end goal. Even for self-initiated work in design exercises and practice, these considerations need to be a part of the process to really be considered “design.” This is why it’s best that inexperienced designers work from creative briefs.
