Go ahead and use the cellulose (lacquer) thinner. It won't destroy your respirator filter cartridge, assuming it's a proper filter for VOCs (Volotile Organic Compounds). Wearing your resperator, if you can smell the paint or thinner, it's not the right cartridge. At the levels of VOCs involved in modelling, cartridge life is simply not an issue.
