The watch I'd get for my dad is definitely not the one you're getting for your dad, because my dad hasn't been on a ladder in probably 25 years. Durable + "holds up next to a speedy"? I like the G-Shock ideas, but let me also include: Bulova Lunar Pilot. https://www.amazon.com/Bulova-Lunar-Pilot-Chronograph-96A225/dp/B07PGX73WQ/ (Probably not the cheapest place to get this, but it's just a link to start with.) Only 50mm water resistance, so I wouldn't take it swimming, but I think that 50mm actually means that it'll be just fine getting dunked or washed off. Sapphire crystal. But also super cool high accuracy quartz movement with high-beat chronograph. And also, it's a space watch-- worn on the moon in the Apollo 15 mission! Citizen Nighthawk. https://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Promaster-Nighthawk-BJ7000-52E/dp/B00074KYC8/ 200m WR, sapphire crystal, very reliable quartz movement. Cool pilot's style watch with some history. 2nd timezone (if you care). Citizen Promaster Diver. https://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Promaster-Diver-BN0151-09L/dp/B00PXVU3GM/ Rugged x 20, ISO certified dive watch. Eco-drive movement means no battery changes basically ever. Good lume; very easy to read for eyes that are getting older. All three of these watches are not small in any sense of the imagination -- the Lunar Pilot is 45mm I think, the Promaster is 44, and the Nighthawk is 42. And I've not even thought about automatic watches because "someone's dad" rarely wants an auto.
