Yes, and the main scientist character Walter is likely based on the real scientist John Lilly who also inspired Altered States, if you like weird psychedelic 1970s science you'll probably enjoy the series. Some others in this vein besides Altered States: --Phase IV, about scientists investigating ant colonies that seem to have suddenly gained intelligence (if you watch this be sure to check out the trippier alternate ending which is online in low-res here and is also available as on alternate cut on the recent 4K/blu-ray set) --The 1979 miniseries Quatermass about a scientist investigating a weird alien-influenced hippie-like movement (a sequel to earlier Quatermass miniseries/movies like Quatermass and the Pit from 1967 which I also recommend) --The Stone Tape, about scientists investigating strange psychic memory-recording properties of rocks used in the foundation of a "haunted" building --The 1980 adaptation of Ursula Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven, about a man who changes reality in his dreams being investigated by a psychiatrist who is something of a mad scientist character --The 2010 movie Beyond the Black Rainbow which tries to recreate this retro 70s/early 80s mad science style, it emphasizes atmosphere over plot but it's great if you like that sort of thing, the director has said it took a lot of inspiration from Phase IV among other influences (it also features a utopian organization founded by a Lilly-like character that has become sinister over time, called The Arboria Institute, reminiscent of the Dharma Initiative from Lost). The psychiatrist interrogating a young psychic seems fairly demented and is not really shown to be doing anything much resembling scientific investigation, though, so only check this one out if you like the vibe of things like the others I mentioned. Also, although it isn’t a fictional narrative with a scientist main character, there's the Leonard Nimoy series In Search of... where he does episodes about weird 70s fringe science and paranormal stuff, probably the reason that Fringe brought him on for cameo appearances as Walter's old partner.
