One thing you can do to avoid tuning up an octave too high is to use reference tones to get it roughly in tune, and then use a tuner to fine tune it. It's really hard to overshoot by an octave this way because your guitar will sound obviously higher than the reference tone. After awhile you'll just know how the strings sound and can just drop the reference tone step. Reference Tones And then use your tuner. I love this tuner - it's a bit pricey at $40, but unlike most clip on tuners it runs on a AAA battery rather than a coin cell and it's very fast at identifying the notes. It's got a 100 hour run time. You can just leave it on and you'll always be able to see what note you're playing. It's a little plasticy feeling, but it comes in handy when you're trying to learn the notes on the fret board.
