We use a system of vibration sensors, motion sensors, and door/window sensors for this purpose. They are inexpensive, and can be discreetly placed along door frames, on ceilings or walls, on perimeter gates and doors, or placed among home decor items where they can be easily overlooked. The system is entirely battery-powered, and uses a special low-power wireless tech (LoRA) which allows each sensor to operate continuously for over 2 years before needing a battery change. Unlike a camera, you get notification when there is actual activity -- not just triggers for shadows, pets etc that require you to manually poke through video clips to verify. You need a minimum of one hub device for the system, but can add as many additional hubs as needed and they can be placed anywhere you need spoken audible notification (even works at a distant location, making this system perfect for remote monitoring). We get instant notification on our smartphones and instant audible notification (text to speech) in the caretaker's office and bedroom using multiple Speakerhubs. The entire system is inexpensive, DIY-friendly, flexible and best of all requires NO contract and NO monthly fees.
