There are lots of modular mix-n-match sock books out there, and most of them suck. (I have at least 3 bad ones.) My recommendation is Kate Atherly’s Custom Socks:Knit to Fit Your Feet https://a.co/d/0cfiGsgv Amazon kindle link because I was too impatient for print Kate is an editor at Knitty. I also have her book on gloves/mittens. She is phenomenal at explaining every measurement you need for a good fit and showing you every technique she refers to. She also has some basic patterns you can use without major adjustments if you have a relatively standard foot. For myself, I prefer to do socks on DPNs, but I have also been happy with long circular needles and the magic loop. I would probably lose my mind with a smal circular, but that’s just me.
