There is an easy homebrew fix for this and it will blow you mind! I had the exact same problem a couple years back. Could not find a replacement tank and had to figure something out and the results were spectacular. Put a hefty handful of 1-1/4" sharp pointed drywall screws and also some 1/4" nuts if you have them laying around. Cap the tank and wrap it in a big hefty king size bed comforter. Wrap it so it is as close as you can to the middle and protected by several inches of padded fabric on all sides. Tape it will so the ball doesn't come loose... Now put the whole mess in the clothes dryer and let it run on low speed and no heat for about 4 hours. It will make ungodly noises but if you wrap it right, there's no way it will damage the dryer. When you open the tank afterwards, a huge pile of rusty dust will come out. Wash it out with soap and water and let it dry in the sun for a couple days. Have to get every last drop of water completely out of there. Get a small 8 oz can of POR 15 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B3HXCZ4). Apply a couple coats. Basically just dump it in, turn the tank every which way until the inside is completely coated and then dump out the excess. Let it completely dry (48 hours in the sun) and add a second coat. The end result will be so clean you can see yourself in the reflection! You're welcome!
