Being 5'4" and preferring to sit within reach of the steering wheel, the center console does NOT work as an armrest for me. I finally started looking for a solution last year (while still driving my Subaru Forester with the same issue). I bought an arm rest insert that fitted OK, in the Forester, but fits perfectly in the Rav4. It makes driving much more comfortable. However the display does shout at me more often to keep my hands on the wheel, even though it does such a great job of lane tracking.
