Are there computer monitors with built in speakers? Yes, and they're generally awful, useful only as emergency backups. I had to use my PG38UQ's built-in speakers for a couple weeks while my speakers got RMA'd and I think it was the worst computer usage experience I've had this millennium. My advice: definitely get a pair of headphones at least, I got a decently-rated set for like $30 on eBay a couple weeks ago. Monitors, as with all human interface devices, are very dependent on personal preference. I love IPS displays but some people don't like their gray black levels and the older panels had a lot of ghosting. For gaming: high refresh, 144Hz minimum these days. One of my PCs has a 1440p 240Hz 24" IPS monitor that I got for $117 on clearance, so you do not have to spend a lot to get a decent monitor.
