How to read literature like a professor - Thomas C. foster- chapter 14 - some of my teenage reading. Assume makes an ass out of u and me. They make a real point of lingering on a shot of long haired bearded homeboy holding up his hands in a very particular position with the police lights flashing. I’m going to assume (since we’re both asses here already) that you don’t have a degree in media and might not have noticed that, to which I very much fucking do. This show goes out of its way to invoke symbolism so don’t fucking start with “it’s not that deep.” And since we’re down here fighting in the Reddit gutters and you’re a media scholar, why don’t you tell me what grand point we should glean from this season’s insightful commentary on America? Please, give me your thesis on what new insights we are all walking away from this season about the state of addiction in this country that we didn’t have before? That it’s all fucked so we should join a cult and live on the homestead? That redemption is a shootout in a strip club to which mid level pimp gets his brains blown out? In that case, so glad I wasted 7 years of emotional investment on this nihilistic fever dream of information I already knew. Yes we know the system’s fucked. Yes we know it’s gory and unsavory for the people at the bottom. Yes we know addiction is cruel and unrelenting, and these stories don’t have happy endings. But for a show that thinks it’s so profound, it seems real scared to say out loud exactly why these characters are stuck in the hell that they are.
