I believe that's how the original controller was anyway. I also wired up some relays to allow for reverse. The best controller I've seen for this is the speedy squirrel controller. https://www.peanutworkshop.com/It has every feature I would want. Another great option I found is the controller used on the huffy Torex (LDR01). It has a variable speed pedal and uses a separate brake.
