It happened to me where I had a phone case with a magnetic stand built into it. Turns out, that was affecting the internal compass of the phone and making it show an incorrect reading. Make sure you minimize magnetic items and calibrate your phone. You can also get a physical compass and use that if that helps ease her. Make sure the compass is on a flat surface.
