What if the person who raised you gave you everything… but never told you what it cost him? ABACUS is a multigenerational family saga inspired by my grandfather’s life, spanning wartime China, Taiwan, and America. It follows a family shaped by war, migration, political violence, fatherhood, silence, and the regrets we inherit from the people who loved us but could never fully explain themselves. For readers who enjoy emotionally driven historical fiction, immigrant family stories, and books like Pachinko or The Joy Luck Club. Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GXQGV15N

So I wrote ABACUS, a historical fiction novel inspired by my family’s true story — from wartime China in the 1940s, to Taiwan, to America, and the complicated cost of the American Dream. Five years of research, writing, rewriting, rejection, editing, copyediting, proofreading, giving up, coming back, giving up again, and coming back again. This is my one and only book. I finally have something I’m proud to share. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GXQGV15N
Full disclosure: I wrote this one, so take the recommendation with a grain of salt. I wrote ABACUS during one of the darkest periods of my life. I was carrying a lot of anger toward my father, a lot of unresolved pain about never knowing my birth mother, and I eventually found myself in therapy trying to make sense of it all. What started as an attempt to understand my family turned into years of researching my grandfather's life and writing a multigenerational family saga that spans WWII-era China, Taiwan, and America. Oddly enough, writing it didn't make me feel more bitter—it made me more compassionate. The deeper I dug into my family's history, the more I realized that many of the people I resented were carrying wounds of their own. I can't say the book "saved" me, but it helped me replace some anger with understanding, and that changed my life. If that resonates with you, it's called ABACUS. It's currently free on Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GXQGV15N
Full disclosure: I wrote this one, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. My novel, ABACUS, is a multigenerational family saga inspired by my family’s history, spanning WWII-era China, Taiwan, and eventually America. It deals with war, immigration, fathers and sons, generational trauma, and the regret of realizing too late how little we understood the people who raised us. I recently received a message from a reader saying they couldn’t put it down and were still thinking about it after they finished. As someone who spent years writing it and researching my grandfather’s life, that meant a lot to me. Since you’re looking for an emotional read that sticks with you, it might be worth a look.
