I don't know if it's an American thing but I see a lot of recipes that have 'tomato sauce' as an ingredient. It's always seems a bit vague to me as to what exactly that is. I also find this really annoying (where, currently living in r/SouthAfrica, someone saying "tomato sauce" means ketchup). That said, despite what you're hearing from people like u/NatasEvoli u/Asleep-Letterhead-16 u/airfryerfuntime in my experience they virtually always contain at least a little onion + garlic if you read the ingredients (despite not mentioning that on the front of the can). e.g. the first 5 "tomato sauce" cans that I found on American websites all include at least onion + garlic (and usually a few other things) if you read closely (the labels on the can photos + ingredients list where that's unavailable). Sources: 1 2 3 4 5 (for this last one I couldn't find an image of the can label of ingredients, but you do find "Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Spices" listed under ingredients in the website text).
