It's weird that no one is mentioning the exact products made for this. I used to use a bandanna, but you can get a piece of fabric that covers just the front of your kayak where your legs are and attaches to stay in place. Just lookup Kayak Half Skirt or Kayak Splash Deck and several kayak manufacturers make them and they have a pocket to store snacks too. You also get more airflow around your legs than draping something directly over them.
