You're over-thinking it. Line your boxes with galvanized steel flashing. https://www.amazon.com/AMERIMAX-PRODUCTS-70008-Galvanized-Flashing/dp/B000BPMQ60/ Don't go to the hardware store and spend a bundle on sheet metal. Get a 50 foot roll of steel flashing and some tin snips and you'll have enough metal to line dozens of boxes. Then go to K&J magnetics (google it) and order magnets. They're not super-expensive. You can get various sizes to accommodate different size models. Attach them to the bottom inside of the base with hot glue or a mix of superglue and green stuff. Just don't go too big on the magnets or your models will be snapping together in the middle of a game.
