Firstly it keeps the sweat off your bed sheets and mattress. Secondly, it pulls the sweat into a layer inside the mat so it doesn't feel as wet and soggy as sleeping on sheets or a towel. And it doesn't smell as much as when you sweat on sheets or towels. Might even be worth getting two so that if you do wake up in dampness, you can throw the mat over your shower rail to dry and put a fresh one in. If you sweat buckets and wake up to a damp mat again, you can swap it out for the other one which is probably dry by then. They dry much quicker than sheets and towels.
