Hoping he has a swift recovery. For protecting his paw and keeping him from licking it, you could try something similar to this - our boy had an issue with one of his claws cracking then he would chew and lick at it too much. The gloves/mitts have velcro straps and mesh on one side so it can get air. (Beware they can chew through the mesh tho). You’ll obv need the surgery site to be wrapped and padded for a while but that extra glove can help to keep them from licking.
