What you need to do in most cases in "dual map" your controller and device. What that means is both the device and the P1 controller will control P1 at the same time. The only systems that can't currently do this as far as I'm aware is Switch. I don't mess with Winlator or WiiU but everything else works. You'll have to spend some time on it when it comes to that point but it'll all work out in the end.
