As someone who religiously adheres to "everything goes into one carryon per person", we have weeded out most of the "we did not need to bring this" items simply for lack of space. Similarly, we are pretty good with the "we should bring this" items. Small things people often forget and should pack (links are examples, not personal recommendations). • Just enough of any OTC or prescription meds for contingencies. Allergy meds, anti-diarrheal, tylenol, band-aids, blister pads, etc. We have never had a problem carrying pills like this, but your mileage may vary. • Ultra-compact fabric shopping bag for Bónus, etc. • Sunglasses. Good for glacier hikes, windy beaches, etc. • Small flashlight (for winter months) • Eye mask (for summer months) • Chapstick and/or dry skin cream • Plug adapter (US to Euro in my case). If you have a charger or device where the fine print says 90-230v, 50/60hz, then you do not need a fancy power converter, you can use the device with a simple plug adapter. • Lighter plug USB adapter. A lot of rental cars already have a USB port, but this takes little space and lets you keep stuff charged in the car. • Collapsible water bottle. You can't get enough of Iceland water, but no point in having a bulky container that has to be empty when going through airport security. • A copy of all your vital personal information that you keep on your person (passport number, credit card info and customer service number, emergency contacts, medical info, etc.). That way it is not in your car, in your room, in your luggage, etc. it is with you. Preferably someplace hard to get to, like in a deep pocket (we use document holders).
