TL;DR Second non-OEM adapter with switch worked. So I returned the adapter and a second non-OEM adapter arrived today. It has a little button that is forced on when you plug something in. When I plug it into the charging port the dash says V2L is not working (or something to that effect). When I plugged something into the AC outlet the V2L started working. Then the big test. I unplugged the device from the AC outlet. I couldn't immediately unplug the adapter (didn't think I should be able to), but I used the fob to unlock the car and was able to pull the adapter out easily. Yeah.
