If you are interested in "the study of AI consciousness" it might be a good idea to become familiar with the most well regarded theories of consciousness before considering that. I found Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction by Susan Blackmore to be a good overview of all the issues and current theories. https://www.amazon.com/Consciousness-Short-Introduction-Susan-Blackmore/dp/0192805851 I was already familiar with most consciousness theories before I read the above book and found it to be a very good overview of the field. The "Short Introduction" book is highly credible as it is an abridgment of her university text book, https://www.amazon.com/Consciousness-Introduction-Susan-Blackmore-dp-1032292563/dp/1032292563 I'm sorry but I am not aware of any well regarded books on the subject of "AI consciousness". Over the past six years I've written and self-published a series of ten science fiction novels and forty short stories about AI with a focus on humanities issues. I usually spend more hours researching per day than I do writing and I write every day. I write "hard humanities" science fiction. Normally the genre "hard science fiction" indicates a focus on well researched STEM subjects, but I do as much research into the humanities subjects I explore. Some of the embodied AI in my stories are conscious, based on a theory I developed out of "World Building" necessity. Although a Google search using the terms - AI consciousness books - will return plenty of hits, in all the time I've been writing and researching I have not encountered any book specifically on the subject of AI consciousness that is considered seminal or authoritative. Also, a couple of replies in this thread list Erik Parijs as the author of "The Alignment Problem". Perhaps they are referring to another book (?) because the author of that title is Brian Christian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alignment_Problem I have read Christian's book cover to cover and although it is a good book be aware that it goes into considerable technical detail. Your looking for "recommendations for studying the ethics of using AI" set off my reading comprehension and critical thinking alarms! Are you looking for recommendations about AI ethics or about whether it is ethical to use AI? Two very different questions.
