It's a laser level, you turn it on and point it at what you want to level. That said, I've found that having a pole mount like this is really handy. Wish I bought one years ago. You can pick them up on Amazon really cheap. When you want to shoot a horizontal line without having to find some way to hang it or are in the middle of a big space.
