My advice, get a handling hook and pin the lil bastard to the wall and retrieve the rat however you please and try again with scissor style tongs

Salad tongs, not the right tool. Get a pair of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CKSSDZD1 Also, grip the feeder by the hips, not the tail. Try to keep the feeder horizontal as if the snake is looking into the face of the rat. Don't wiggle it. Also, if you drop the feeder on the ground and your snake is already interested, just close the glass and let the snake do snake things.
