I use these for dogs and baby goats even though they are for people. I don't use hot water, just warm water and regular laundry detergent from Costco. OH and I put 10 drops of tea tree oil in each load. Helps kill the bacteria that causes odors. Then I just throw them in the dryer and dry them. The dog poop and pee comes out, the goat poop and pee comes out. They pee and poop all over them. Often times the pee spots are dried out by the time I put a clean pad in for them in the morning. I throw them in a pile after shaking the poop off outside and wash them when I have a load. They don't stink. I keep them in a different tote and store them for use the next goat kidding season. The only time the pee goes onto the other side is when the kids tap dance enough in the tote to fold and edge over and they pee on it. I didn't think they would work this good, but they do. I would think that if you used a water proof mattress pad cover with this on top, there should never be a smell. I don't even think you need the water proof mattress pad.
