This is my journey.. perhaps it will help. Important to Note: I have no Local Yarn Store (LYS) I decided to take up knitting as I thought it would take up less space in my home than sewing and I really didn't want to start all of that again. I had already given away my sewing machine, serger, and pleater. I will try to focus on what I did right that EVERYTHING that I did wrong. But, first wrong was I ordered a Learn to Knit Kit from Sierra Yarns. While I was waiting for it to arrive, I ordered some yarn from and needles from Amazon, found some videos and started practicing. Once the kit came in, it was anything but BEGINNER. I could barely cast on much less purl or read a pattern! I slowed down, did some research and ordered the Learn to Knit Kit from Purl Soho. Highly recommend! I was able cast on was knitting a scarf! Mistake number 2, I fell down the rabbit hole of all not just looking at but buying beautiful yarns and the needles for all kinds of projects on the Purl SoHo site. So dumb to think that I would be able work with fingerling weight yarn anytime soon! I then ordered some Dishie yarn from Knit Picks and a nifty little booklet from Knit Picks called Learn to Knit and Purl. https://www.knitpicks.com/knit-bits-learn-to-knit-and-purl!/p/N4902 What a great little resource. I think I have made maybe 10 dishcloths! I have since been working patterns in washcloths out of a yarn called June from Purl Soho from this book. Another great resource. Easy Knit Dishcloths.. Easy Knit Dishcloths: Learn to Knit Stitch by Stitch with Modern Stashbuster Projects: Neigaard, Helle Benedikte: 9781589239562: Amazon.com: Books. All that yarn that I ordered from Purl Soho and the needles were arriving and it became rapidly apparent that I was over my head! Most will disagree with this next purchase. But, needles were driving me batty. As best as I can ascertain, Chiaogoo Needles are the most widely liked. I ordered the complete set of 5" Spin Needles, put all the others aside and decided these would be my favorites! I have made a couple of scarfs with yarn from We Are Knitters. OK, but would not recommend. I have made the Super Eash Crib Blanket in Super Soft Merino from Purl Soho. Great success. Then, I thought I was off to the races. Wrong again. I attempted a patterned blanket from Knit Picks out of acrylic. It is all in my car ready to go to Good Will. I started on what I thought was a relatively easy kitchen towel pattern from Purl Soho out of June. But, when I looked at the picture of the completed towel on the PS site... my looked like soup! I spent the next week on tension. Very Pink Knits is a great resource. I was lucky to find a set of Chiaogoo Forte Needles used on ebay for $150 without the cables. I purchased some swivel cables on Esty from Handsome Fibers and love those needles too! Today, I working on another Learn to Knit Scarf, the Super Easy Baby Blanket in Daily Wool Worsted (throw size), and a scarf out of Cashmere Merino Bloom in the Mistake Rib pattern. Yesterday, I returned some yarn to Purl Soho and am working to stay at my skill level and add a new skill every other week or so. Next up is learning how to knit in the round with the Purl Soho, Learn to Knit a Cowl pattern. Storage: My yarn is in small shoe box size stackable containers with a label as to the yarn and what I purchased it for. Needles: I did splurge on a ReDesign #14 case for my first set of Chiaogoo needles and love it. The Fortes come in a beautiful case. My straight needles are in an old Lenox vase. My extra tips are in a lovely leather case that I purchased from an Etsy vendor from the Ukraine. Take with: Since I am such a novice, I can only take the most simplest projects with me. I have a zipper bag from Purl Soho that works great. If you start falling down the Purl Soho rabbit hole... they do have beautiful yarn! Remember, the have sales all of the time and if you miss a sale and email them, they will promptly send you a sale code. I subscribe to The Yarnist and the published a list of the top 13 knitting skills needed to complete 80% of the projects. I only wish it has been listed in order. I am working through this list. Hope this was not TMI and again only my journey! My goal is to give everyone I love and then some a scarf for Christmas, cashmere for my children, learn to knit a simple Christmas ornament, finish this big blanket by Halloween, learn to knit in the round soon, and learn to knit socks in 2027!
