I know it's 7 years later, but google in their infinite wisdom brought me to this ancient thread. I just wanted to chime in with a little correction here: there exist several varieties of adapter between 12V and Sata and they include a little baby buck converter on the line to downstep the 12v to 5v for the sata pins that need it.
