Get a Slipdrive https://a.co/d/0h7Ex1f8 to hold an SSD and a short USB-C cable, preferably with a 90 degree. I have a MacBook Air and almost always leave mine attached. I usually remove the drive before putting it in a case, however, and often leave it home since it holds my Time Machine backups in addition to storage for things like games.
