You thread a weight plate (like the kind you would use on a barbell) through the chain, and it hangs between your legs. If you don't have a dip belt, you can hold a dumbbell between your feet, a plate between your knees, or you can thread a long loop resistance band through a plate and wear it like a backpack, like this. I've also seen people hang a kettlebell off their foot. One time I put a dumbbell in the pocket of my hoodie. Points for creativity.
