For my boy's pen, I have layers. The base layer is a clear mat. On top of that is carpet. On the carpet is a fleece throw blanket. In one corner of the pen is his litter box. My entire set up is easy to clean. I just take the blanket and shake it out outside before putting it in the washing machine. I vacuum his carpet every so often.
