Man, I feel you- I was recovering from a colitis flare when I visited last month. Like you saw, Japan's public restrooms are really accessible and (generally) clean- subway stations, most parks, and shopping centers/malls/etc. will always have them. I used to swear by this stuff when I lived there and actually brought a ton back to the US with me. It tastes like actual garbage, but if you do a mouthful of water and dump the packet in and then swallow the whole thing it's bearable. They have chewables but I don't think they work as well. Like someone else said, Japanese cuisine is pretty mild. A lot of restaurants will either have pics of food on the menu or little dioramas outside, so you can see if something is fried or not (+ anything -age like kakiage or karaage will be fried). Udon with clear broth should be fine, but I would avoid ramen as even the lighter broths lean fatty in my experience.
