Joined SAR team, attended training every month for years. I take the compass out with the maps every time. We used GPS too, WITH the map, and benefitted from it. Whenever I'm out with someone relying on GPS I always double check with the map. It takes less time for me to determine the bearing, and GPS can be off. Once I was assigned to a team of SAR volunteeers, we all calibrated and double checked the map datum was correct, then punched in the UTM coordinate we were given as the end of our gridline. Three of the four units drew a line in the wrong direction. One was correct. That was enough to solidify that I will always have a map to use and continue to use them to keep those skills intact. Here is the book that we used to start everyone off with orienteering. https://a.co/d/0eJfxbLk
