I got traumatized from a can opener accident I caused once where I cut myself so I can't tolerate it now. My apologies if you really don't want to touch on this further, and please just ignore if so--but have you tried the 'side cutter' types that leave no sharp edges at all? I use this one but there are cheaper options too.
