I’ve been on CPAP for almost six months. Not gonna lie, it was the pits at first. I was prescribed the Resmed Airsense 11 with the P10 nasal pillows, size small. I fought that small nasal pillow for 2 months trying to get it to fit comfortably and not leak. I liked how minimal that whole mask set-up is and I was bound and determined to make it work for me. Then for some weird reason my mom and I were talking about CPAP masks (turns out she has almost the exact same set up as I do) and she said that she had fought with the small nasal pillows, too. She finally decided to try the medium nasal pillows. Made all the difference in the comfort level. I did the same thing with the same results. I did have to resort to a chin strap to keep my mouth closed when I turn on my back in my sleep. I tried the Resmed one, it was a joke. I would wake up with the strap that goes over the top of my head down on my forehead and the part where the chin goes over my mouth. But they have many others that are very similar. Now, back to the original question. It took me about three weeks to notice any change. In spite of the poorly fitting nasal pillows and the occasional mouth opening, my AHI went down, I don’t have to get up to potty in the middle of the night and I don’t need naps during the day. Since I got my two minor issues figured out, I plop the stuff on my head (after I put my night guard in but that has been a 25 year thing) and go sleep in about 15 minutes. I don’t really feel any of the gear after the first couple of minutes. I realize that I am fortunate that I have adjusted well. I do think going into this new norm with a positive attitude is very important. My mom and sister in law are both very successful with their CPAPs, too.
